Christmas is a time for magic, not mountains of wrapping paper and toys that break by Boxing Day. With a little planning, you can give gifts your children will love just as much — while cutting waste and cost. Here are our favourite reduce, reuse, recycle ideas for Christmas 2027.

Reduce: choose fewer, better gifts

It’s tempting to pile presents under the tree, but children often remember the one toy they truly loved, not the dozen they unwrapped. Try the simple rule: something to wear, something to read, something they want, something they need. It keeps the day special without the overwhelm — and your cupboards clearer in January.

Reuse: borrow before you buy

Not every toy needs to be bought new, or bought at all. Through Derbyshire Toy Libraries, you can borrow quality toys, ride-ons, puzzles and role-play sets for a fraction of shop prices — perfect for trying out a big-ticket item before committing, or keeping play fresh in the weeks after Christmas when the novelty of new toys fades fast.

Second-hand and pre-loved gifts are also having a moment. Toy sales, auctions and swap events (keep an eye on our auctions page) are a brilliant way to find good-quality toys at a fraction of the cost — and give them a longer life.

Recycle: wrap and party with less waste

  • Wrapping: Save gift bags and ribbon year to year, use brown paper and string, or let little ones decorate plain paper themselves.
  • Cards: Many Derbyshire villages run card recycling points in January — or make your own from last year’s cards.
  • Parties: If you’re planning a New Year gathering, our reusable party packs swap single-use plastic plates and cutlery for a washable kit, saving hundreds of items from landfill.
  • Batteries and packaging: Recycle batteries at most supermarkets, and flatten boxes for your usual recycling collection.

Give the gift of play, not just stuff

A Derbyshire Toy Libraries membership makes a lovely, low-waste present for a child in your life — a year of ever-changing toys for less than the cost of one new one. Join online or visit a Stay & Play session to find out more.

However you celebrate this year, a few small swaps can make Christmas just as magical — with a lot less landfill.
